I have been working in the nonprofit tech space doing social media and online fundraising consulting for about four years now, and I have been amazed that so many organizations involved in community development and civic engagement work are not really utilizing technology to advance their missions. There are some larger organizations I see, like NeighborWorks and Center for Community Change who have dove in, but I wonder about organizations like the Urban League or CDC's and why they haven't utilized the social web more to engage people.

What do you all think? What are some of the limitations to CBO's getting involved in the web? Lack of technology relevant to their use cases? Lack of knowledge of technology?

I'm not sure but I have observed some lack of knowledge of technology. I think as more examples become available of successful applications at the CDC level more organizations will jump in. As part of a workshop I was involved with in May, a colleague and I started a blog about uses of social media in community engagement. We've been trying to post examples.

I think that technology is quickly embraced where there is money to be made. A company seeks out technology to increase revenue. Technology is expensive so there has to be an ROI in order to justify the expense. Technology is more recently becoming accessible to the masses for free by way of social media. I think technology and the concept of making it for you and not you work for it is going to be big in the next few years. Those who start now will be the experts that people look to when everyone decides to “Get in on it.” - Baltimore pun :) Just as the dance floor fills up quickly but only once someone takes the first step, so too will this concept start to take off.

Thanks Vince. At this time, I know non-profits do not have access to RD's loan origination software, UniFi. I'm not sure how much we've discussed the issues of access to CAIVRS in the 502 course.
