With the growing/garden season upon us I just wanted to make sure all you urban gardeners are taking a basic precaution.

If you plant vegies in your foundation beds and live in a pre-1978 house you should have a lead based paint soil sample taken to make sure your soil is not contaminated.

This is a two fold issue - first you may be digging in, breathing and handling contaminated soil. Second, you may be growing in contaminated soil.

So find a local risk assessor or sampling technician and have a soil sample taken to protect your family and yourself.

Happy (and safe) growing!

The paint I mentioned below, besides providing a R 60 rating for insulation of a wall or ceiling has zero VOCs, is waterproof and stops air infiltration. This is all tested by and independant lab. Right now the price is $150 a gallon. But does the job of several systems in the home. With mass production this should drop in price.

Consumer reports recent issue has an article on interior pants. They rate Behr (Home Depot), Kilz Casual Colors (Wal-Mart) and Valspar Signature Colors(Lowes) as top choices with low VOC content in satin and eggshell finishes. They rate Behr and Glidden (both at Home Depot) and Valspar (Lowes) as top choices flat and matte finishes - low VOCs as well.

For semi-gloss Behr, Valspar and Sears Best Easy Living Ultra have low VOCs and are top rated. Sears brand is $20/gal. And remember, you can get 5 gallon pails at Home Depot and Lowes

If you are still looking for BPI training, get in touch with me. I have been doing Wx since 1984 and while BPI falls short, several of their students shadow me for credit, it is a start. I am working with two groups to open training centers to create jobs in depressed areas in the nation and working on rolling out a new heat pump created here in Montgomery Co., Md which gets 27-30 SEER and provides hot water for free or as a side product. It will be a critical part of the carbon negative community planned in West Va. I will be visiting that site next week. It is amazing what Americans can come up with when pushed.....like a paint with R 60 results!

HomeStar Program info - the "cash for caulkers" program that has been proposed. This may be of value for those doing rehab as well as a line of business for those who want to get experience and become an auditor or a quality assurance provider.

Hey folks,

Just an update on recent activities in the Construction and Production (CP) training track.
The CP track had the good fortune of handing out the last two faculty awards at the training institutes in DC and New Orleans. For those not familiar, each NTI we award one faculty member the Kenneth Jones Excellence in Training Award for outstanding performance and contributions to the NTIs as well as the field.
In December we honored Tim Bolding, ED, from United Housing in Memphis. He does a wonderful job in the new construction and ARR training.
In March we honored long time trainer and rehab specialist extraordinaire Paul Webb for his training expertise, hhis long time support of and contributions to the rehab and construction field. Congratulations to both and I suggest you sit in on one of their courses if you have not had the opportunity!
