Community Planning, Justifying a need for Social Planning

I've been a member of the American Planning Association (APA) for a number of years now. As a member of that organization a common objective is to obtain AICP status, or American Institute of Certified Planner. However, the social planning field appears to be not valued to the same extent and held in the same regard that physical planning commands as evidenced by the limitations of what the organization generally considers NOT professional experience, which is required to set for the test. The…See More

Hi Kurt,

We've just expanded our mission from affordable housing to comprehensive community development. We've partnered with a local neighborhood center to focus on our near-downtown neighborhood for the next few years as we "grow into" our new mission.

By the way, your photo doesn't look like it was taken in Lincoln!

Mark
Although we have a public GIS system, it doesn't have any imbedded planning tools that would help us with neighborhood revitalization. With your background, I wondered if you are aware of programs that would help with this--hopefully building on top of the data that is already here, but give us some tools to analyze infrastructure condition, look at walking distances to neighborhood assets, plot owner-occupied vs. renter-occupied housing, etc.

Thanks for any knowledge you can share.
